An overbite is when there is a significant protrusion of the upper teeth past the lower. This can result from crooked teeth, a misalignment of the teeth and jaw, or genetics. Overbite correction is necessary to correct this issue. Here at Central Texas Orthodontics, we are proud to provide overbite correction for our patients and encourage you to learn more about it.
The Common Causes of an Overbite
The most common issue requiring overbite correction is due to the size or the shape of the teeth or the jaw. There may not be enough room for the teeth in the jaw area or the size of the teeth are too large. Without overbite correction, the teeth will become crooked, crowd or be spaced too far apart. An overbite can be caused when children or infants suck their thumbs or consistently use a pacifier or a bottle. A common cause for adults and teenagers is chewing on objects such as pens or biting their nails. Additional causes include:
- Grinding teeth
- Genetics
- Temporomandibular joint dysfunction or TMJ
Serious health complications can result if the overbite is not corrected including irreparable tooth damage resulting from abnormal teeth positioning or TMJ. The potential complications include:
- Tooth decay including worn enamel, gum disease, and cavities
- Difficulty closing or opening the mouth
- Severe headaches
- Jaw pain
- Difficulty speaking
- Pain or discomfort while eating
If overbite correction is not performed, the result can be an alteration of the facial structure leading to low self-esteem. In most cases, the patient is referred to an orthodontist by their dentist for overbite correction. It is easier to provide treatment for children because their jaws are still developing. For teenagers and children, the crowding of teeth is the most common problem. Numerous adults developed an overbite because they did not receive preventative treatments as children.
Who is a Good Candidate for Overbite Correction?
The correction process begins with an examination and the formation of a treatment plan. X-rays are necessary to determine which kind of overbite the person has and the correlation to the jaw. The best treatment can then be determined. Anyone with an overbite may be eligible for this corrective procedure. It also helps to harbor realistic expectations in terms of what the procedure can accomplish.

Excellent service and treatment!

Category: orthodontistWe have been seeing Dr. St. Loius at Central Texas Orthodontics for a couple kids now over several years. Everytime we walk in for an appointment, we are greeted warmly and promptly taken back. The office is easy to get to and always runs on time, we have never had to wait to be seen, which is remarkable for a medical/dental office! The payment options were also fair and easy to understand. And the follow up, even after those braces come off, has been stellar! Retainers get lost or chewed up sometimes (ugg!), but a quick text into the office and we were able to drop off the original molds and have new ones made very quickly. Everyone who works at this office truly cares, and you can tell they all enjoy where they work, which is really wonderful to see. I cannot speak highly enough of this office, the staff, the care, and ESPECIALLY the after care and protecting our investment.
