Understanding the Different Types of Braces

If you’ve been doing your research, you already know that there are different types of braces available. This is largely due to advancements that have been made over the years in the medical field. Here at Central Texas Orthodontics, we are proud to offer various types of braces for our patients to choose from. Options include self-ligating braces, clear braces, and clear aligners. Of course, traditional braces are also still an option. During a consultation at our office, you can learn more about each type and which one may be best for you.

Self-Ligating Braces

Using the same material as traditional braces, self-ligating braces can consist of metal, ceramic, or clear brackets. A specialized clip is used rather than elastics to assist the archwire as it guides the teeth into the correct positions. This option has a number of benefits, one of them being requiring fewer trips to our office for adjustments.

Clear Braces

Clear braces are made of a ceramic clear material. They offer more discretion than traditional metal braces and self-ligating braces. Clear braces are most commonly used on upper front teeth because they are brittle and need special care.

Clear Aligners

Although clear braces are popular with teens and adults, one option that is gaining popularity is clear aligners, and for good reason. These custom-made aligners offer a discreet, easy way to straighten the teeth. Using clear aligners, you may even be able to undergo orthodontic treatment without your classmates or coworkers knowing it.

As an added benefit, clear aligners are removable, which means you can take them out during special events, when you need to brush and floss, and when you eat. As you can imagine, this offers a major advantage in a number of situations. Plus, the aligners are designed to be comfortable for the wearer.
